SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Philippines — The province of Surigao del Norte experienced a strong aftershock, again, at past 8:00 a.m. yesterday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Siesmology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a 5.9-magnitude quake 6 kilometers west of San Francisco, Surigao del Norte with depth of 13 kilometers and has a tectonic origin.
The PHIVOLCS said the tremor is an aftershock of the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that hit the province on February 10.
A 66-year-old woman died of cardiac arrest, while almost 30 people were reported injured in the incident.
Several structures have also been damaged.
“we made an inspection of the damage because those structures damaged by the first earthquake had additional cracks. In fact, there were gymnasiums in San Francisco that collapsed. In Surigao itCy, there were two totally damaged houses.”
Classes are suspended today in all levels in the towns of San Francisco, Mainit, Sison and Taganaan which have been greatly affected by the strong aftershock. This is to enable the government to conduct an integrity check on school buildings before classes are resumed.
Surigao del Norte Governor Sol Matugas added that the tremor aggravated the situation of some towns in the province that have been experiencing floods due to relentless rains.
On the other hand, the local government assured that relief operations are continuous for residents affected by the earthquake and floods.
Teachers continue to give psycho-social debriefing to students to keep them calm amid aftershocks.
Governor Matugas said some residents have been traumatized by the February quake that they continue to fear every slight tremor.
“The situation in the province is serious, I tell the residents to pray. There is no other solution. We cannot fight nature,” Matugas added. — UNTV News and Rescue
