LEYTE, Philippines — Authorities are continuously working to determine the extent of damages caused by the magnitude 6.5 earthquake in Leyte on Thursday afternoon.

Government personnel continue to conduct assessments in affected areas especially in mountainous places near the epicenter of the earthquake.

National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson, Romina Marasigan said, “This is what we call rapid damage assessment and needs analysis.

This is being undertaken by the government to ensure that we can immediately provide aid to our compatriots who have been affected by the calamity.”

Marasigan released the names of the two casualties namely 40-year old Gerry Movilla, who was buried in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey building and 19-year old Rhissa Rosales who died after hollow blocks collapsed on her.

Seventy-two were reported injured: 43 in Kananga Leyte; 3 in Ormoc City, and 26 in Carigara Leyte.

Although roads with cracks in Ormoc going to nearby Leyte remain passable, motorists are still told to take caution.

“If your travel is not that important, just stay inside your homes so you will be safe from any disaster,” advised Marasigan.

Classes at all levels have been suspended in Tacloban City and Ormoc City.

In Jaro, Leyte, where the epicenter of the earthquake was located, cracks were found in two buildings of the Bienvenido Celebre National High School in Barangay Uguiao.

A landslide also occurred at Mt. Amandiwing, Brgy. Rubias Jaro Leyte.

Power supply has also been affected in most parts of Eastern Visayas particularly in Leyte, southern Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and several areas in Samar.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs recorded 241 aftershocks at five in the morning on Friday since the strong earthquake hit Leyte the day before. — Lea Ylagan | UNTV News & Rescue
