The Department of Health (DOH) continuously reminds the public to find other items for merry-making this holiday as the number of injuries related to firecracker use continues to soar.

To date, the National Capital Region (NCR) records the highest number of firecracker-related injuries in the country, according to the latest tally of DOH.

“From the National Capital Region no less than 45 of the 89 cases or 50% of all cases come from NCR. The next region with the highest is region 6 with 10 or 11 % of the total cases and followed by Calabarzon or region 4-An or 10% of the cases,” said Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Ubial.

This is particularly true in Manila and Quezon City.

As of Thursday, 90 persons have sustained injuries due to firecrackers; 89 were injured for using firecrackers while one was due to ingestion while ‘Piccolo’remains the number one firecracker to cause harm.

“We also warn the public and call the attention of our local government partners that ‘Piccolo’ which is an illegal firework is still the number one cause of injuries accounting for 58% of the injuries,” said the DOH chief.

The health department has begun making rounds in hospitals to ensure their preparedness ahead of the revelry.

DOH reminds the public to use alternative items in merry-making such as trumpets, car horns or karaoke instead of lighting firecrackers.

The public is also encouraged to adhere with the local ordinance such as going to designated areas of fireworks display to enjoy the revelry.

“The only countdown that should be monitored this year is the remaining days until we celebrate the New Year, and not the number of injuries and deaths of innocent people,” said Ubial. — Aiko Miguel | UNTV News and Rescue
